Project Overview
Connected packaging is often reduced to simple QR codes or generic campaign links. This project explored a more advanced model: packaging that could carry a unique identity while remaining visually unchanged.
HP’s technology made it possible to encode a unique dataset into an image without materially changing its appearance. Denovi developed a web system that could process consumer interactions with that encoded image and turn each package into a unique, single-use digital touchpoint.
The concept allowed a consumer to engage with a package, create an online account and establish a secure link between that account and that specific piece of packaging. Once the link was made, no other user could claim the same package or use the same identity path.
The Technical Challenge
The central challenge was designing both the user experience and the system logic around a new form of product identity. The interaction needed to be simple enough for a consumer, but secure and controlled enough to demonstrate the value of unique packaging identity.
The system needed to manage account creation, unique identification, single-use interaction and experience delivery. It also needed to explain the value of the technology without overwhelming the consumer with technical detail.
From a brand perspective, the concept had to feel personal and useful rather than gimmicky. The opportunity was to create a deeper relationship between a product, its packaging and a digital account-based experience.
Design and Development Approach
Denovi approached the project through both UX ideation and functional web system development. Early work focused on defining the consumer journey: how a user discovers the interaction, scans or engages with the image, creates an account and receives a unique experience.
The web system was developed to demonstrate account creation, unique package identification and controlled experience delivery. The system logic treated each encoded image interaction as a distinct identity event, allowing the package to become a secure gateway into a personalised digital experience.
Careful attention was given to the user interface. Because the underlying technology was sophisticated, the front-end experience needed to feel direct and understandable. The consumer did not need to know how the encoding worked; they needed to understand that their package had unlocked a unique connection.
The concept also explored how ownership or access could be passed securely. This opened up possibilities for limited editions, rewards, loyalty experiences, collectible packaging and brand-led account relationships built around a physical product.
Outcome
The project delivered a fully functional web demonstration system showing how encoded packaging could be used to create secure, single-use and personalised digital interactions. It demonstrated a more advanced future for connected packaging, where a product can carry its own identity and become part of a controlled account-based experience.
For Denovi, the project demonstrates capability in connected product UX, identity-led web systems, brand experience design and the translation of emerging technology into a clear consumer-facing proposition.
